Michel Gondry's videoclip art
Famous director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) and The Science of Sleep (2006), Michel Gondry is a visionary director to all intents and purposes, and in videoclips this overdeveloped imagination is in the service of one of the most engaging and “fast” art forms. Björk, The White Stripes, The Rolling Stones, The Chemical Brothers, Kylie Minogue, Radiohead, Beck, these are just some of the groups and music artists he works with (the collaboration with Björk has been lasting for many years and it’s the result of tests and “games”). Universes multiply, figures split in two, the animated worlds are placed side by side with the real ones, all in a real visual orchestration, between applied technology and choreographic simplicity. Gondry’s universe is like a Rubik’s cube (his performances about it are very famous), it’s necessary to change and turn the view to discover new colours and fantasies.
Today the collaboration between music and image is the protagonist non only in the universe of music tv channels, but it’s the creator of a real visual art that often take the audience through the dual concept known notes in unknown visual spaces, a collaboration that could hold unexpected surprises: if we take the collaboration Gondry/Björk, we will be always fascinated by the “inventive” and “recreational” ability of their collaboration. All is the result of a cooperation, so Gondry’s mastery is to embrace completely the specificity of his interlocutors, but without betraying an artistic track: his superimposed and infinite worlds, rhythmicity of the ending (Gondry was the drummer of the group Oui Oui) etc., milestones in his works, are in the service of the “customer”, giving life to something “hybrid”, typical of Gondry’s works just because there is also space for other things, not only for the self.
