Brakhage stesso spiega che l'impulso di fare Murder Psalm è nato dopo un incubo in cui aveva sognato di assassinare sua madre. Le immagini che colpiscono maggiormente vengono da un film educativo sull'epilessia (di Dupont), attorno al quale Brakhage struttura il suo lavoro. Brakhage himself explains that the impulse to shoot Murder Psalm was born after a nightmare during which he dreamed he murdered his own mother. The most impressive images come from an educational film about epilepsy (by Dupont), and Brakhage based his work on it.
